  • Techniques and Materials
  • Reflective writing. What you think about what you're doing.
  • Body of work in progress.

Understanding storytelling and narrative

A style or category of art, music, or literature. A set defining characteristics to be grouped with others.
Most common genres in film/animation are: Action. Comedy. Drama. Fantasy. Horror. Mystery. Romance (Your lie in April, your name). Thriller.
Genres can be blended so you get Romcoms, Dramedies, mystery-fantasies etc.

Genre Theory

Genres change and adapt as times change a sci-fi form 50 years ago will not be the same as a sci-fi from 2020 however there may be key tropes and traits that may be consistent with both, there's more growth within the recent films as conventions adapt and grow.

Video game genre

Video games relate to how the player interacts with the game. So while Red Dead Redemption 2 and Minecraft don't look like each other ro share story themes, they are both considered Sanbox games (among other things)

Sandbox
Real-time strategy (RTS)
Shooters (FPS and TPS)
Multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA)
Role-playing

Genre talk

My favorite genre is horror and specifically survival horror for video games. I just enjoy morbid and dark content and love the creativity that goes into alot of creature designs, conjuring up dark and morbid creatures from some of the simplest ideas.

Conflict

Conflict powers story whether its in a film or game
Types of conflict to consider
Character versus character
Character versus nature
Character versus machine
Character versus Self (internal conflict) (Oedipus)
Character versus society
or character versus fate

Dan Harmon Story Cycle

  1. The character is in a zone of comfort
  2. But they want something
  3. They enter an unfamiliar situation
  4. forced to adapt to change
  5. Get what they wanted
  6. Pay a heavy price
  7. they return to their familiar situation
  8. Having changed.

Animatic idea

For my storyboarding project I'm thinking about doing a story that I've had in my head for a long time and planned on using the story for my 2nd year BVA comic book project however changed the project last minute. I would like to continue this idea, originally I planned to create an action scene between a master and pupil training the pupil is arrogant and head strong and by the end of the animatic will learn to be more calm and focused during a fight. However I may decide to change this idea and go with something completely different, I will hopefully come to a conclusion by next lesson on Friday or next week.
