Final Thoughts

Image
Overall I'm pretty pleased with how everything has turned out and overall I'm pretty surprised with the outcome. Digital art has never really been my strongest attribute in comparison to my oil paintings which most people tend to prefer as well but seeing how not only myself but how other people have reacted to my digital work this year, especially with this piece has really lessened my insecurities about my work slightly (only slightly heheheh). However I do think I could  have done a lot better with this work as most of the artwork on the baord I did within a span of 2 weeks because I left it all to the last minute, I was so worried that I was gonna fail the year because of this but after many long nights and stays at the sit campus (not overnight ofc) I was able to get everything done pretty early in fact, however that left me cutting some corners especially with my landscape work which I rushed, as well as some of the props. Props and landscape a...

Assembling everything OwO

Image
Today everything was finished and assembled, the C U B E was put together fully with all the artwork and decorative stuff on full display. The only problem I really had in this stage was cutting the artwork as I overestimated the sizes of some of the prints and had to cut some extra bits of the side for all the prints to fit on correctly the cube. I did have some issues with creasing for some of the artworks especially the main poster I made which kept creasing, however after a long struggle I was able to get it sorted out.  Original measurements which I made a little to big :/ Biggest brain Here are some images of everything all sorted and put together.  A lot of the items I used to decorate the top of the box were things I just had lying around my house pretty much, the only thing that I had to buy to decorate the top of the C U B E was the candles which I used slightly beforehand to give them a little bit more character instead of them, being perfectly straight and un...

Sculpture Done + boards

Image
I've finally finished my sculpture and am pretty happy with how it turned out, however getting there was pretty difficult I guess. When I had finished my sculpture I had a problem with it not being able to stand and when it came out of the oven it was pretty clear why it was struggling to stand, my dumbass didn't full the skirt so there was just tinfoil keeping it together so naturally when it came out of the oven it struggled to stand and was on a bad lean. While the final version has a bit of a lean I managed to alleviate it slightly by breaking of her bottom legs and gluing them back on, while I used a crap ton of hot glue it fixed the issue pretty well. Over the holidays I wanna try experimenting a little bit more with sculpture and see how I go to try and improve my skills as I really enjoyed making the sculpture, even though my first attempt trying the clay was really bad as I don't know if my hands were just weak that day or I just got a bad batch of clay as it just...

Finalish print layout and C U B E update

Image
Above is the rough draft of how I envisioned the C U B E and layout of my pieces. Below is the new layout with all the final pieces all ready for printing.    A lot has changed with the final rendition of the work available, originally I was under the belief that there would be four sides for some reason? But seeing it nice and ready for printing with what I think is a solid layout is really nice a fulfilling.

Enviroment Part 2 Extended edition

Image
A lot of the work on my board so far is rendered pretty thoroughly which isn't exactly the point of concept work. So I decided to do some more rough sketches of locations of what could be in the game. for one room I decided I wanted it to be worn and rough,  bedroom the other a somewhat abandoned room that's been left to decay.  With the bedroom its very rough especially with the colors as well I mainly just wanted to capture a rough design on what it could potentially look like. What I mainly focused on was what would be in the room the style of bed the manor would have and furniture adorning the room. With alot of the furniture I based it roughly on Victorian era designs with a focus on more of the lavish side of the era giving the bed a canopy and the room many items with gold/bronze trimming.  With most of the furniture, locals and props within my concept work I took a lot of inspiration from the Victorian period alongside the gothic side. One thing I noted in the Vic...

Buying Wallpaper + Sculpture

Image
I have started working on my sculpture and so far I'm pretty happy with the progression even if it is just in the early stages of development. I think I've translated the body of my character pretty well into the sculpt. One thing that I am struggling with is how I'm going to do the hands and the legs are annoying me a bit as the keep cracking which may not be as much as an issue as I think as I can hide it with the skirt.  To decorate my C U B E I'm going to be using wallpaper so I went searching for some. When I looked online  a lot of  wallpaper was really expensive 40-100$ just for 1 roll, even on trademe, so I went looking at some op shops in town.  I was looking for a specific type of wallpaper one that kinda had an old musty look to it and somewhat resembled my rough designs.

Epic Poster and font

Image
Because my project is heavily inspire by slasher films and slasher inspired games I wanted to create a poster that fits in to the typical slasher style with some influence form the games that I'm using as influence from my project. Because my game is heavily inspired by Clock tower I looked at the film that inspired clock tower, The burning. The burning was a 1981 film directed by Tony maylam and its known for it infamous gory killings as well as the titular killer,  Cropsy, who goes around a summer camp murdering the fraternizing teens. I wanted to mainly look over the posters used to advertise the the film and what one is more effective than the other. The first poster is probably the most iconic the killer leans over the river the blood from the weapon turning the river into a flow of blood, The campers unaware as there canoes are entering the killers jaws. This poster references one of the most graphic scenes within the film as a group of campers are rowing in there ...

More character

Image
While I have finished creating my character design I wanted to draw more of her face to give an idea on what she looks like from different perspectives and expressions. While the first 3 heads weren't to difficult the screaming expression was probably the most difficult anything to do with open mouths I just struggle drawing them. I also struggled a bit with the consistency of some of the heads however I think I got there in the end and whoever is looking at these concepts should have a good idea on how Alice looks and how her hair is. In the last image I decided to give her a loose strand of hair as when someone is panicked they aren't really gonna stop to fix there hair and I think it adds to the expression. I might go back and make her hair more frazzled maybe.

More Props!!! and furniture

Image
Props I have finished rendering the rough sketches of the furniture designs from my previous post. I also decided to work on creating one of the most important props of the game the murder weapon, a long pair of gardening scissors. With the furniture designs I wanted to give them an old dusty look, like it hasn't been cleaning in a while, also enhance the antique look. I think I've done this well with the chair however it is pretty warped which is due to how it hasn''t been maintained and someone haphazardly trying to fix it. I've also included another variation of the chair with torn cushions and a some more details to separate it from just a plain old char and give it that antique look with all the Victorian details.  I've included two variations of the murder weapon one where its been in use with  blood dripping of it and another just plain without blood. The killers hands are purple and a lot more fleashy because his body is constantly rotting. I really like...

Environment Development

Image
I've started to flesh out the environment sketches in my previous post adding more detail. In some I focused on detail and in others I focused more on the atmosphere and harsh shadows. The main environment I focused on in terms of detail is a room where kidnapped victims are kept deep below the house with the only light source being the candles, because of how old this part of the house is there is no electricity, the walls have cracks and are made up of lengthy worn planks that have aged with the house. This part of the manor I want to contrast with the more well put together façade of the place. As the player slowly explores the manor slowly begins to unravel revealing more of its darkest secrets as its explored.  Because I am thinking about keeping the game as a side scroller like the traditional clock tower games I've wanted to show what it could look like as the player navigates. I also looked at a fixed camera angle like many horror PS2 games (resident evil code veronic...

Props

Image
Prop development uwu  In one of my previous post I drew some rough ideas on what kind of props would fit within the environment of the game. Because the manor is owned by a family of alchemists a lot of the equipment would have to kind of fit in with that a mixture between traditional science stuff and whimsical magical stuff so with an earlier design for props I went all out designing every little thing that could be included from a book made out of skin to a statue bust that could be used for a potential puzzle (notice the jewel indent on the chest) however with some of these I expanded them slightly.  One prop that wasn't there was a frame which I thought would be cool showing the residents and the legacy of these "great alchemists". I thought it would be cool to show the painting in different states, the first being as it was originally intended to be viewed the second having a hole in the canvas, which toes into a mechanic for the game that I thought would be cool. B...

Display ideas

Image
C U B E Below are some of the ideas I have for what I want my display boards to look like.  Because I game is set within a manor having the sides of the cube decorated with wallpaper that's old and peeling I think would look cool. Maybe even having the sides peeling with blood down the side. In terms of decorating the top of the cube I might include some bloodied scissors alluding to the killers murder weapon and some candles. I'm thinking of also including an artbook on top of the cube however that depends on how much time I have.

Finalizing character designs

Image
Character design  I started to finalize the main character Alice's design, going over some of the earlier sketches and adding some color to get a feel on what kind of colors I want her to wear. I've started trialing colors and really like the blue and green, its very dull and meek which would fit her character perfectly. I've also trialed some hair colors and skin tones because I want her to appear frail I think I might giver her a very pale skin tone to help accentuate that. I've started working on the rough design and really like the look of it the baggy attire and kept back hair gives her the appearances of a shy goody toe shoes, in the sense that she always firmly follows the rules not one hair out of place. As the design progressed not much changed from the original except for her face which I altered taking away any of the sharpness giving it a more bubbly look and shrinking the height of her head  slightly and making sure her hair was kept tightly beneath her hea...
