Reflection

 Final reflection

I’ve never really done an animatic before or any kinds of animation before so this overall process was very new to me, however one thing is very clear to me  next time I will definitely not have as much dialogue as I had in this animatic. Figuring out things such as pacing and the flow of the story is largely affected by the timing of the dialogue, because I had such large chunks of dialogue I had to cut a lot of it out which meant that I had to readjust a lot of my storyboard, thankfully I’m actually quite happy with how things turned out given my inexperience and that I rarely do any line art so throughout the animatic my lines are fairly shaky however I do think it’s still readable.

Sound was also a bigger task than I originally fore-sore. I originally thought it would be quite easy to source some sound effects which isn’t necessarily the problem but finding the right ones that fir within the story. Even after finishing my animatic I’m still a bit iffy on some of the sound effects, mainly the bonk at the very start of the story where Awarini hits Eva on the head, I was really unsure how it should sound and tried my best to find a sound that would fit, although I feel it isn’t the best option. If I had more time I would try recording my own sound effects

Because most of my art is fairly painterly being forced to do linework makes me step out of my comfort zone a little bit which is something I appreciate, also being forced to draw things from all kinds of different perspectives was something that i appreciated as I’m very selective with how I draw my characters opting only to draw above the waist which is why when I draw legs they look like two giant pieces of salami.

I wanted to try doing an animatic with a lot of action scenes as I tend to limit myself when it comes to what I draw and so I often don’t do to many dynamic poses, while I did struggle a bit when creating these panels going so far as to completely overhaul the main action scene at one point, I’m pretty happy with how the main action scene turned out especially the close up shot where the swords connect, I think the moment is very fluid and readable. In comparison to the original panels I had the scene is a lot shorter, which looking back on it makes a lot of sense. The action is fast paced and quick to not only fit in within the 1 minute I have but creates a lot more of an impact.

What I will do Next time

Next time I will definitely not have heavy dialogue, and maybe I might at colour I didn’t really think to add it too much unless to heighten a certain scene, such as the sparks when the swords clash for example. I also think rather than focusing on two characters I’ll focus on a character interacting with their environment to avoid having to record dialogue.

While I don’t think I’ll be much of a storyboard artist in my lifetime I’m relatively happy with the work I’ve produced.

  1. Great work on your blog this semester! The reflective writing is especially good. Circle back and include a link to the final animatic so the reader can see what you've been working on all semester.
