Character Design

Character Design concept

Because my story is set within an isolated mansion/castle the year its set in doesn't have to much relevance to the environment however it will have an impact of the attire of characters and the tools at there disposal. I have decided to set it during the late 80's, the time period where slasher films were most were most prominent and the where the fear of night stalkers in middle class suburbia was at an all time high. This time period also means that there will be little means of communication with the outside world from the castle, no cell phones and no internet means there's very little way for the main character to contact anyone for outside help.

Looking at what kind of clothing was popular during the 80's the baggy shirt and mom jean combo seemed to be all the rage, with bright colors. This was also the period where the mini skirt came into fashion however because the main character is a shy naïve girl the mini doesn't fit her character that well.

Doing some silhouettes and rough designs I have an idea on what I want the character to look like. I want her to look conservative to illustrate her sheltered upbringing, so a long skirt, a baggy shirt and straight hair are some ideas I have to represent this. These designs aren't finailish however they are a sign of what kind of direction I am leaning towards.
While I want her clothing to reflect the time I don't want her to look as if she is afforded the most popular of clothes. Because she is constantly moving with her father she ahs very little time to keep up with trends or buy any new clothes, so I want a lot of her clothing to bland and dull, so in terms of color I'm going for blue and green hues and maybe a small pop of orange to contrast with the rest of her outfit.
